Paris Photo Blog

As photographer living in Paris, I tend to be out in the streets a lot, discovering interesting corners that tourist books don't mention and visitors don't generally see. I also visit photo galleries, events and exhibits, big and small. This blog is a place for me to share some of this information with others who might be interested.
Doisneau Exhibit

Between 1976 and 1980, the famous photographer Robert Doisneau walked through some of my favourite Parisian covered passages, taking pictures in Passage Verdeau, Passage Jouffroy, Galerie Vivienne, Galerie Véro-Dodat, etc. His pictures were published in 1981 in a book titled: "Passages et galeries du XIX siècle. Le piéton à Paris" ("19th Century Passages and Galleries: The pedestrian in Paris"). Until January 15th, 2010, you can see a free exhibit presenting a collection of these photographs at the Musée de la Monnaie de Paris.

Xmas Lights on the Champs Elysees

If Paris is called the city of lights, it becomes particularly true during the Christmas season when all the glitters come out! This year, the official Holiday Season kick off happened on November 23 and the festive lights on the Champs Elysées will stay on until January 10, 2010. Seeing the famous avenue illuminated is always a treat and taking pictures of it pretty easy.

The covered passages were located in some of the richest part of the city when they were first built...

Stairs in Montmartre

To include or not to include people in a photograph, that is the question! Cities are by definition places where people live and gather. For urban photography, the difficulty is that as soon as a person is included in a picture, it becomes the focal point of the image. So there are no two ways about it, either you include people in the shots and they are the focal point, or you do what it takes to eliminate them from the image.

La Defense

When I ask visitors to Paris if they know or have been to La Défense, very few know of it or can place it on a map. Even fewer know that it provides photographers with a wealth of subject matter...

Michael Kenna

Until 24 January 2010, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) is presenting a retrospective of Michael Kenna's photography. The exhibit includes images from his early work inspired by Bill Brandt through to his more recent images from various countries such as Japan, India, China and more.

The black and white photos along with Michael Kenna's minimalist compositions and sense of design make his work both timeless and modern. Playing with light and texture, Kenna is a master at creating dream-like images, drawing the viewer into his work and making it easy to imagine being in there alone...
